How to choose the type and accuracy level of Almen test pieces
Type:
The Almen test piece is divided into three types, namely A piece, C piece, and N piece. Their difference lies in their thickness, but their length and width are the same. The type of test piece to be used is determined by the process designer.

• A-type test pieces are used for medium strength shot peening strengthening applications. The commonly used shot peening media are cast steel shot with a diameter of 0.3-0.8mm and steel wire cut shot.
• N-type test pieces are used for low-intensity shot peening strengthening applications. The commonly used shot peening media are glass pellets and ceramic pellets.
• C-type test pieces are used for high-strength shot peening strengthening applications. The commonly used shot peening media are cast steel shots with a diameter greater than 0.8mm and steel wire cut shots.

Accuracy level:

• Level 3– Universal models (A-3, C-3, N-3) comply with MIL-S-13165C and AMS-S-13165 standards. Affordable price, large packaging (A and N pieces
  1000 pieces/box, C pieces 500 pieces/box), suitable for the automotive industry.
• Level 2- Standard (A-2, C-2, N-2)
  Complies with MIL-S-13165C and AMS-S-13165 standards. The surface is oil-free and coated with a special anti-corrosion layer. Can be stored for a long time. (50 pieces/box for A and N pieces, 25 pieces/box for C pieces), suitable for the automotive industry.
• Level 1- Plus type (A-1, C-1, N-1)
  Complies with SAE J442 standard, and the accuracy of each side of the test piece reaches± 0.025mm, and each piece has undergone flatness inspection. Each batch has a batch number that can be traced. (50 pieces/box for A and N pieces, 25 pieces/box for C pieces), suitable for the aviation industry and high demand automotive industry.
• Grade 1S - Special precision types (A-1S, C-1S, N-1S) comply with SAE AMS2432B standard, and the accuracy of each side of the test piece reaches± 0.013mm, each test piece has factory records and can be traced. (50 pieces/box for A and N pieces, 25 pieces/box for C pieces), suitable for the aviation industry.
